Vikings battle hard but fall to Lake Forest

APPLETON, Wis. -- The Lawrence University volleyball team put out a great effort on Wednesday but dropped a 3-0 Midwest Conference decision to Lake Forest College at Alexander Gymnasium.
    The Foresters topped Lawrence 25-18, 25-18, 25-15.
Aliana Butler-Gray led the Vikings with seven kills, and Kylie Naylor added six kills, seven digs and a service ace. Callisa Lo and Gracie Pettit picked up four kills apiece for Lawrence.
Marife Entenza had a double-double with 19 assists and a team-high 10 digs. Libero Daphne Piotrowski added nine digs and had a team-high three aces.
In the opening set, the Vikings were down 20-10, but Lawrence battled back. Lawrence went on an 8-2 run as Naylor and Pettit both picked up aces, and Naylor and Butler-Gray added kills to trim the lead to 21-15. After a kill from the Foresters, Lawrence scored the next three points, capped by Naylor's ace, to cut the lead to 22-18. The Foresters then scored the next three points to hold off the Lawrence comeback.
In the second set, Lawrence grabbed an early 6-4 lead before Lake Forest came back to grab an 8-7 edge. The Vikings struck back with a 5-1 burst with kills from Lo and Naylor and an ace from Piotrowski for a 12-9 advantage. Lake Forest then scored the next eight points for a 20-13 lead, but again the Vikings countered. Lawrence got a pair of kills from Butler-Gray as part of a 5-2 run to cut the lead to 22-18. Lake Forest again scored the set's final three points to take a 2-0 lead.
In the third set, Lake Forest got off to a good start and pulled out to a 14-7 lead. The Vikings closed to 15-10 but couldn't get any closer.
