Lawrence shoots past Bucs

BELOIT, Wis. -- The Lawrence University women's basketball team used good shooting and solid defense Tuesday to put together a 79-63 victory over Beloit College in the Midwest Conference opener at Flood Arena.
Lawrence shot 48.3 percent from the floor, including 52.9 percent from beyond the arc, and limited Beloit to just 33.3 percent from the floor, including a tepid 13.3 percent on 3-pointers.
Emma Carlson posted her fourth double-double of the season with 14 points and a career-high 14 rebounds for the Vikings (2-4, 1-0 MWC). Maggie Culver led Lawrence with 15 points and added four rebounds.
Delaney Brooks came off the bench to score 11 points for the Vikings and went 3-for-5 from 3-point range. Libby Crandall picked up nine points and grabbed five rebounds for Lawrence.
A big first-half scoring outburst put the Vikings in control after trailing 7-2 after more than five minutes of play.
Crandall got a 32-11 Lawrence run started with a 3-pointer, and Carlson made a pair of free throws to tie the game at 7-7. Following a Beloit layup, Culver countered with a layup before Ashley Batac made a pair of free throws and Lydia Lueck closed out the quarter with a 3-pointer to give Lawrence a 14-9 lead after one.
The Vikings kept the offense going in the second quarter with Culver scoring the first three points and Crandall adding four more points as Lawrence surged to a 23-13 lead. Jumpers by Brooks, Culver and Carlson and a 3-pointer from Brooks capped the run to give Lawrence a 34-13 lead with 2:43 left in the opening half.
The Vikings would go on to lead 39-24 at the break.
Lawrence pushed the lead back up to 20 and led 58-36 after three quarters as Caroline Sharpe punctuated the period with a 3-pointer. The Vikings led by as many as 27 points in the fourth quarter before Beloit pulled closer in the final three minutes.
Elizabeth Kalk scored 28 points and pulled down 10 rebounds for Beloit (3-4, 0-1).
Lawrence returns to action on Saturday when it hosts Grinnell College at Alexander Gymnasium.
