ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. --
Emma Carlson poured in 21 points Monday to lead the Lawrence University women's basketball team to a 64-52 nonconference victory over Mount St. Joseph University.Â
Carlson went 9-for-13 from the floor and added a game-high nine rebounds at the McArthur Center on the campus of Eckerd College. The game was part of the St. Pete Classic.
Carlson was Lawrence's lone double-figure scorer as
Maggie Culver added eight points and six rebounds and
Mallory Meyer had seven points and three boards.
The Vikings (6-6) took the lead for good late in the second quarter, and Lawrence pulled away late in the third. The Vikings used great 3-point shooting to seal the victory in the fourth quarter.
Mount St. Joseph, located in Cincinnati, Ohio, and a member of the Heartland Conference, led by as many as five points in the opening quarter. The Lions were still up two late in the second when Culver tied it with a pair of free throws. Carlson followed with a jumper after a
Libby Crandall steal to give Lawrence a 27-25 lead with 3:20 left in the first half. Meyer connected on a pair of free throws with 37 seconds left to give Lawrence a 31-26 lead at the break.
The Lions had closed to 38-37 midway through the third quarter when Lawrence pulled away.
Josie Eager's jumper started a 10-0 run as Culver hit a jumper,
Taylor Svoboda scored four consecutive points and Carlson finished the burst with a layup for a 48-37 lead.Â
After a Mount St. Joseph free throw slowed the momentum, Lawrence countered with a pair of free throws from Carlson and a Meyer layup for a 52-38 lead heading to the fourth quarter.
Carlson opened the final period with a 3-pointer, and
Lydia Lueck and
Delaney Brooks followed with triples to push Lawrence's lead to 61-40 with 7:16 left. Lawrence went 4-for-5 on 3-pointers in the fourth quarter and finished the game 6-for-10 from beyond the arc.
Mount St. Joseph never got closer than the final margin of 12 points. Karlee Mills led the Lions (2-5) with 15 points.
Lawrence returns to action on Tuesday at the St. Pete Classic when the Vikings face Pacific (Ore.) University.
