Game Recap: Men's Ice Hockey |

Vikings start strong but can't finish against Trine

APPLETON, Wis. -- The Lawrence University men's hockey team got off to a strong start Friday at the Appleton Ice Center, but Trine University rallied for a 6-2 Northern Collegiate Hockey Association victory.
Lawrence jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first 12-plus minutes of the contest, but Trine scored the game's next six goals.
The win clinched home ice in the NCHA Harris Cup quarterfinals for Trine.
Zach Lodes got the scoring started for Lawrence (10-10-4, 8-7-2 NCHA) when he fired Lawrence's second shot of the game past Trine goaltender Shane Brancato. Will Crull and Vincent Dekumbis picked up assists on the tally.
Senior forward Davis Kirkendall quickly made it 2-0 when he scored off assists from Kyle Gierman and Will Robertson at the 12:11 mark.
That was it for Brancato, who was pulled in favor of Elias Sandholm. Brancato made just one save during his stint. Sandholm, helped by swarming Trine defensemen, recorded 10 saves over the final two-plus periods.
Lawrence goaltender Alex Mosquera finished with 38 saves.
Trine got back in the game when Thad Marcola scored on the power play at the 15:04 mark of the first, and Lawrence held a 2-1 lead after one period.
The score stayed that way until midway through the second period when Marcola scored to tie it at 2-2 at the 10:42 mark. Justin Meers gave Trine the lead with his goal just 47 seconds later.
Trine held a 3-2 lead heading to the third period, but goals from Marcola and Jackson Clark in the first 8:15 pushed the advantage to 5-2. The Thunder added an empty-net goal to complete the scoring.
The teams wrap up the series and the regular season on Saturday.
