Vikings drop wild one to Concordia

    APPLETON, Wis. -- The Lawrence University women's hockey team fell 9-4 on Saturday to Concordia University Wisconsin in a wild Northern Collegiate Hockey Association game at the Appleton Ice Center.
    The Vikings cut a four-goal deficit back to two before Concordia pulled away late in the second period and early in the third. The game featured 16 penalties, four power-play goals and a short-hander.
    Concordia jumped out to a 3-0 lead before Laney Martens scored on the power play for Lawrence off a pass from Lindsey Gulliksen at the 13:40 mark of the opening period.
    Concordia stretched the lead to 5-1, but Gulliksen answered for the Vikings with a goal at 17:40 to trim the margin to 5-2 after one period.
    Lawrence was back on the power play in the early stages of the second period, and Gulliksen cashed in. With assists from Lauren Moravchik and Martens, Gulliksen scored at the 7:31 mark to cut the margin to 5-3.
    Lawrence went 2-for-8 on the power play.
    The Vikings were back on the power play later in the period, but Concordia's Natalie Mackrell scored a short-handed goal at 14:26 to move the lead back to 6-3. Concordia then scored on the power play at 17:21 and led led 7-3 after two periods. The Falcons were 2-for-7 on the power play.
    Concordia then scored the first two goals of the third period to seal the win. Lauren Askenazy picked up the final tally for the Vikings at the 15:18 mark.
    Maeve Tallman started in goal for the Vikings and made seven saves in the opening period. Charlie Prior played the final two periods for the Vikings and stopped 34 shots. Cheree Peters made nine saves for Concordia.
