Earl carves place in Lawrence basketball history against Ripon

APPLETON, Wis. -- Lawrence University women's basketball Kenya Earl became the greatest scorer in school history on Wednesday night in a Midwest Conference game against Ripon College.
Earl scored 15 points and passed men's star Chris Braier as the top scorer in Lawrence history. Earl now has 1,567 points, and Braier, a three-time All-American from 2004-06, held the record at 1,565.
Ripon spoiled the party with a 63-39 victory over the Vikings at Alexander Gymnasium.
Earl, who grabbed a team-high seven rebounds, was the only Viking to score in double figures. Delaney Brooks came off the bench to score nine points and was the only Lawrence player to hit a 3-pointer. Maggie Culver added eight points and six rebounds for the Vikings (8-11, 5-6), and Mallory Meyer added seven points and two rebounds.
Skyylar Brescia had a double-double of 11 points and 13 rebounds for Ripon (14-9, 13-1).
This game had all the makings of a down-to-the-wire defensive struggle until the middle of the third quarter.
Ripon built an early 8-2 lead, but the Vikings reeled the Red Hawks back in with the help of a three-point play from Meyer. Ripon held a narrow 12-11 lead after one quarter.
Culver's layup to open the second quarter gave Lawrence its first lead at 13-12, but Ripon bounced back to take an 18-13 advantage.
Lawrence then outscored the Red Hawks 8-2 to take the lead back. Culver started the run with a layup before jumpers from Brooks and Earl. Culver finished the run with a jumper, and Lawrence led 21-20.
Ripon rallied to take a 25-23 lead at the half.
Earl tied it at 25-25 with a layup, but Ripon then eased out to a 41-27 lead by going on a decisive 16-2 run. Earl's jumper finally stopped the outburst, but Ripon then scored the next nine points to lead 50-29 after three quarters.
Lawrence didn't get closer than 19 points in the fourth quarter, but Earl picked up a three-point play with 2:31 left to move past Braier on the all-time scoring list. The game was halted briefly to acknowledge the achievement, and Earl got a standing ovation from the crowd.
Lawrence returns to action on Thursday when the Vikings travel to Lake Forest College.
