ANGOLA, Ind. -- The Lawrence University men's hockey team lost a 3-2 heartbreaker to Trine University in a quarterfinal series of the Northern Collegiate Hockey Association Harris Cup playoffs at Thunder Arena.
Lawrence, which need a win Saturday to force a decisive mini-game in the two-game series, led throughout until Trine tied the score with eight seconds remaining in regulation. The Thunder won the game with a goal 3:49 into overtime.
The Vikings jumped on top in the opening period when
Zack Olen scored at the 13:47 mark for a 1-0 lead. It was Olen's ninth goal of the season.
Lawrence (10-13-4) doubled the lead when
Kyle Gierman, the team's assists leader, scored at the 13:33 mark of the second for a 2-0 edge.Â
Trine (19-8-0) got back into the game when Thad Marcola scored on the power play at the 7:45 mark of the third.Â
The Thunder pulled goaltender Shane Brancato late in the contest for an extra attacker. The Vikings nearly cleared the puck from their zone several times in the final 30 seconds, but Trine got a shot on net late. A scramble ensued and Drew Welsch pushed the puck past Lawrence goaltender
Brian Tallieu to tie the game in the final seconds of regulation.
During the five-minute, 3-on-3 overtime, Marcola got loose to Tallieu's right, and his wrist shot proved to be the game-winner with 1:11 left in overtime.
Tallieu finished with 43 saves, and Brancato made 10 saves over the final 22:39 to get the win.Â
