Game Recap: Women's Ice Hockey |

Vikings nearly knock off Lake Forest

APPLETON, Wis. -- The Lawrence University women's hockey team turned in one of its best efforts of the season Saturday and came up inches short in a 4-3 Northern Collegiate Hockey Association loss to Lake Forest College at the Appleton Ice Center.
Lawrence scored three consecutive goals and led 3-2 entering the third period. Lake Forest got a goal seven minutes into the period and then got what proved to be the game-winner with 2:52 left in the game.
Lauren Askenazy scored twice for the Vikings, and Delaney Kingsland picked up a goal as well.
Charlie Prior was superb in net for Lawrence as she made 57 saves.
The Foresters jumped out to a 2-0 lead with just over four minutes left in the opening period. Lawrence cut that lead in half when Askenazy jumped on a loose puck and beat goaltender Donna Fowler with just five seconds left in the first.
Lawrence wasted little time in getting the score tied in the second period. Kingsland shook the Lake Forest defense and fired her shot from the high slot into the upper corner of the net at the 4:47 mark to tie the game at 2-2.
An interference penalty on Lake Forest's Abigail Tucci put the Vikings on the power play later in the second period, and Lawrence cashed in. Askenazy beat Fowler again to give Lawrence a 3-2 lead at the 13:17 mark.
The score stayed that way until Megan Truman scored for the Foresters at the 6:58 mark of the third to tie the game at 3-3.
Lawrence had a chance to grab the lead late in the game when Kingsland got a breakaway. She cut across the goal face but goaltender Hannah Turnage, who entered the game at the start of the third, made a skate save to deny Kingsland.
With three minutes left, Lake Forest played the puck into the Lawrence zone, and Prior tried to beat Lexi Nguyen to the puck. Nguyen got a stick on it first and poked it into the net for a 4-3 lead.
Lawrence pulled Prior for the final 1:55 in favor of an extra attacker, but the Vikings couldn't get the equalizer.
