CLERMONT, Fla. -- Lawrence University rookie
Mattigan Haller blasted a pair of home runs Friday, but the Vikings were edged 12-10 by Westminster (Mo.) College in a nonconference softball game.
It was the final game of Lawrence's spring break trip to Florida.
The Vikings built a 10-4 lead before Westminster rallied for eight runs in the fifth inning to surge ahead. Lawrence loaded the bases in the top of the seventh inning, but Westminster escaped the jam to get the win.
Haller went 2-for-5 and hit the first two home runs of her collegiate career, drove in five runs and scored twice.
Mikayla Jeneske also went 2-for-5 and scored a pair of runs for the Vikings, and
Khayla Santiago went 3-for-3, drove in a run and scored a run.
Lawrence grabbed the lead in the top of the first when they manufactured a run. Jeneske reached on an error and two walks loaded the bases before
Taylor Hughes lifted a sacrifice fly to score Jeneske.
Lawrence then tacked on four runs in the second when Santiago started the rally with a two-out single. Jeneske followed with a single,
Xiomara Rueda-Marshall singled to score Santiago. Haller then smacked a three-run homer and Lawrence led 5-1.
Westminister scored three times in the bottom of the third to trim the lead to 5-4, but the Vikings responded in the top of the fourth. Rueda-Marshall started the inning with a walk, and Haller followed with a two-run shot to push the lead to 7-4. A walk to
Jordan Wallin-Swanson was followed by an error on Hughes' ground ball, and the Vikings were back in business.
Mary Boyle then stroked a two-run double to score both runners for a 9-4 lead. Santiago capped the rally with a run-scoring single to plate Boyle for a 10-4 advantage.
 Â
Lizzy Angemi came on in relief for the Vikings and set down the side in order in the fourth. Angemi ran into trouble in the fifth and allowed seven runs, only two earned, as Westminster took the lead at 12-10.
The Vikings rallied in the seventh when Santiago walked, Jeneske doubled and Rueda-Marshall walked to load the bases with no outs. Westminster got a popup, a strikeout and another popup to end the threat and close out the game.
