APPLETON, Wis. -- The Lawrence University baseball team jumped on Knox College early Saturday and romped to a 14-2 Midwest Conference victory over the Prairie Fire.
Lawrence led 2-1 when it exploded for nine runs in the second inning to pull away. The Vikings also got a stellar pitching performance from ace
Quinn Berglin, who tossed six innings of two-hit ball to earn the victory.
Lawrence (19-10, 14-5 MWC) piled up 13 hits, led by
Zach Leslie, who went 2-for-4 with three runs batted in and two runs scored. Paker Knoll was 2-for-2, walked three times, scored three runs and drove in a run.
Preston Anderson was 2-for-4 with two RBIs, and
Jeffery Cambra was 2-for-3, scored three runs and drove in a pair.
The Vikings hit Knox starter Brandon Ward hard in one-plus inning. After Leslie doubled to drive in a run in the first, the Vikings tacked on another run with the help of an error and led 2-0 after the first.
Lawrence then used six hits, two walks, a hit batsman and three Knox errors to score nine times in the seconds. Cambra and Anderson both had two-run singles in the inning, and
Nick Heerde,
Edan Perez and
Taylor Freeman all had run-scoring singles. After Knoll drew a bases-loaded walk to force home a run, the Vikings led 11-1 after two innings.
The Vikings then added three more runs in the fourth as Knoll started the rally with a two-out single. After a stolen base and error, Cambra was hit by a pitch and stole second. Leslie then singled to right to drive in both runners for a 13-1 edge.
Jacob Charon followed with a triple to right field to score Leslie for a 14-1 lead.
Berglin allowed just two infield singles in the second inning as he struck out eight and walked five to improve to 5-1 on the season.
David Jachimiak worked the seventh for the Vikings and closed out Knox (6-23, 4-14) via the 10-run rule.
The teams wrap up the three-game series on Sunday with a noon doubleheader at Whiting Field.
