Charon sets home run record as Vikings sweep Ripon in dramatic fashion

ASHWAUBENON, Wis. -- The Lawrence University baseball team pulled off a dramatic doubleheader sweep of Ripon College Tuesday at Capital Credit Union Park and saw a school record fall in the process.
Lawrence won the opener 6-0 and took the nightcap 7-6 with a ninth-inning rally. Lawrence slugger Jacob Charon also hit his 10th home run of the season to set a new school record.
In the second game, Taylor Freeman went 3-for-4, and Jeffery Cambra, Zach Leslie, Charon and Edan Perez all had two hits for the Vikings (9-6, 4-1 MWC).
Ripon built a 6-1 lead through six innings, and Lawrence's defense kept the Red Hawks close in the late innings. In the top of the seventh, Ripon had runners at the corners with one out when Evan Barbian hit a fly ball to Charon in right field. Charon made the catch and threw out Samuel Ott, who had tagged up at third, to complete an inning-ending double play.
Lawrence then scored in the bottom half of the inning when Freeman singled and came home with the help of an error to trim the lead to 6-2.
Ripon (9-8, 5-3) threatened again in the eighth with runners at second and third with one out. Nick Terrell hit a fly ball to Charon, who made the catch and threw out Cormac Madigan at the plate to complete another inning-ending double play.
The Vikings pulled closer in the bottom of the eighth when Charon doubled and scored on Perez's double to cut the lead to 6-3.
Freeman got Lawrence's rally in the ninth started with a one-out single, and Mitchell Sandleback reached on a fielder's choice in which Ripon did not record an out. The rally looked like it was going to die when Freeman was picked off at second, but Parker Knoll smacked a double to right-center and Sandleback scored to cut the lead to 6-4.
Ripon then replaced starting pitcher Mau Villegas, who allowed 10 hits, struck out two and didn't walk a batter. Cambra greeted reliever Caleb Green with a single to score Knoll and trim the lead to 6-5. Leslie then blasted a double to right-center to score Cambra and tie the game at 6-6.
Ott moved from third base to the mound, and Jake Cedar came on to play third. Charon hit a ground ball right through Cedar and pinch-runner Ethan Plantz scored to give the Vikings the walk-off victory.
Shane Foley pitched the final inning for the Vikings to pick up his first collegiate victory. Green didn't record an out in the ninth and took the loss.
In the opener, the Vikings got a stellar pitching performance from Michael Duttlinger and rode that to the victory.
Duttlinger went the distance and recorded a five-hit shutout. He struck out five and walked one to get his first win of the season.
Lawrence pounded out 13 hits as five Vikings recorded two hits apiece. Cambra went 2-for-4, drove in two runs and scored twice. Perez also went 2-for-4 and drove in a pair of runs. Leslie, Sandleback and Freeman all had two hits apiece.
Lawrence jumped on Ripon with a pair of runs in the first. Knoll started things with a double and scored on Cambra's single. Perez doubled later in the inning to score Cambra for a 2-0 lead.
Charon then blasted a solo homer in the third to set the record and give Lawrence a 3-0 lead.
Lawrence went up 4-0 in the fifth when Perez singled to score Cambra, who had reached on an error. The Vikings added a pair of insurance runs in the eighth as Sandleback delivered a run-scoring double and Cambra picked up a run-scoring single for the final margin.
The Vikings return to action on Saturday when they host Illinois College at Whiting Field.
