Vikings drop doubleheader to Lake Forest in season finale

    LAKE FOREST, Ill. -- The Lawrence University softball team dropped both ends of a Midwest Conference doubleheader to Lake Forest College on Sunday at Mohr Field.
    The Foresters won the opener 13-4 in six innings, and Lake Forest took the nightcap 10-2 in five innings.
    In the opener, Xiomara Rueda-Marshall went 2-for-3 with a double and drove in two runs for the Vikings. Chapin Grumhaus and Jordan Wallin-Swanson both went 2-for-3 with a run scored, and Mattigan Haller belted a homer and scored a pair of runs.
    Lawrence (4-34, 2-14) grabbed a 3-1 lead in the second inning. Haller led off the inning with a homer, her fourth of the season, to tie the game at 1-1. After Wallin-Swanson and Grumhaus singled, Rueda-Marshall doubled to score a run. Shelby Johnson followed with a single to score Grumhaus, and the Vikings led 3-1.
    Lake Forest scored two in the bottom of the third and then grabbed a 9-3 lead with six runs in the fourth. The Foresters and Vikings traded runs before Lake Forest scored three times in the sixth to close out the victory.
    Hannah Smith allowed four runs on eight hits over six innings to get the win, and Rueda-Marshall took the loss.
    In the second game, Lake Forest (23-13, 15-1) jumped out to a 6-2 lead after two innings and closed out the contest with three runs in the fifth.
    Mikayla Jeneske went 2-for-3, scored a run and drove in a run for the Vikings.
    Lawrence got a run in the first when Jeneske singled and later came home on a wild pitch. The Vikings also picked up a run in the second when Laney Martens singled and scored on Jeneske's double.
    Carlie Mertz allowed five hits over five innings to get the win, and Lizzy Angemi took the loss.
