APPLETON, Wis. -- Lawrence University baseball player
Colin Wieska has a new nickname, "The Prophet".
A few days ago, the senior catcher was quoted in the media as saying that he felt his team wasn't out of a game until the 27th out was made. How right he was because Illinois College only managed to get 26 outs in the Midwest Conference Tournament opener Friday at Whiting Field.
Lawrence rallied for four runs with two outs in the bottom of the ninth to pull out a 16-15 victory over the Blueboys.Â
In a wild game that saw five lead changes, the teams combined for 30 hits against eight pitchers.Â
 Â
Edan Perez went 2-for-5 with two homers and drove in three for Lawrence (24-11).
Jacob Charon also had a pair of hits, homered and drove in four runs.
Zach Leslie went 3-for-4, homered and drove in three runs, and
Jeffery Cambra was 3-for-6. Lawrence's
Luke Miles smacked his first career homer, a pinch-hit, two-run shot.
  Lawrence pitcher
Steven Geiger got the final out in the top of the ninth to record his first career victory.
Lawrence was down 15-12 heading to the bottom of the ninth, and Illinois College pitcher Ben Jarboe retired the first two batters. Miles got things started when he reached on an error, and walks to
Spenser Ross and
Nick Heerde loaded the bases.
 Â
Parker Knoll reached on another infield error and two runs scored to cut the lead to 15-14. Cambra then singled to right and pinch-runner
Mitchell Sandleback scored to tie the game. Leslie drew a walk, and the bases were loaded for Charon, one of NCAA Division III's top power hitters.
Ryan Matheny came on in relief and Charon hit a cue shot between first and second. Second baseman Kellen Blum fielded it, spun and threw late to first. Knoll raced home with the winning run, and the celebration was on.
It looked like the Vikings were in control early when Leslie hit a two-run homer in the first. Lawrence added six more runs in the third when Charon blasted a three-run homer, and Perez followed with a solo shot. Leslie had a run-scoring double in the inning, and Heerde had an RBI single as well for an 8-1 lead.
The Blueboys (17-23) rallied for seven unearned runs in the fourth against Lawrence ace
Quinn Berglin to tie the game and took the lead with a run in the fifth. Lawrence then scored four times in the seventh when Perez belted a two-run homer and Miles hit another two-run shot two batters later for a 12-9 lead.
Illinois College rallied for five runs in the eighth and another run in the ninth to take a three-run lead before Lawrence's winning rally.
