Lawrence trims Lions for NCHA victory

APPLETON, Wis. -- The Lawrence University women's hockey team made a little history Friday with a 4-1 Northern Collegiate Hockey Association victory over Finlandia University at the Appleton Ice Center.
Lawrence, in just its second full season of women's hockey (they played an abbreviated campaign in 2021), won its first NCHA game behind a solid effort both offensively and defensively.
The Vikings dominated on the puck and posted a 52-26 advantage in shots on goal. Lawrence jumped out to a 2-0 lead after one period and sealed the victory with a goal late in the third period. Three Vikings scored their first career goals in the game as well.
Lawrence goaltender Chasity Anderson earned her first collegiate victory. Anderson stopped 25 shots, including 11 in the third period, to get the win. Laney Pasemko made 48 saves for the Lions.
Lawrence jumped on top midway through the opening period with a power-play goal. After Finlandia's Cassidy Becia was sent off for slashing, Lindsey Gulliksen cashed in on the power play. Gulliksen scored off assists from Elsie Salerno and Lauren Askenazy at the 10:12 mark for a 1-0 lead.
Lawrence (2-16-0, 1-8-0 NCHA) finished 1-for-6 on the power play. Finlandia was 0-for-5 on the power play.
The Vikings made it 2-0 at the 15:06 mark when Sophia Labrecque scored her first collegiate goal. Labrecque got the puck from Madi Mishica and the shot from the blue line threaded its way through the defense for the goal.
Lawrence made it 3-0 when Taylor Halverson scored her first collegiate goal in the second period. Halverson's wrist shot off a pass from Askenazy beat Pasemko at the 9:37 mark for a three-goal edge.
Finlandia (0-20-0, 0-11-0) cut the lead to 3-1 on Libby Plath's goal at the 13:21 of the second.
The third period was scoreless until late when Aislinn O'Hagan made several nifty moves and sent a backhander past Pasemko for her first collegiate goal. Her tally at the 18:14 mark gave the Vikings a three-goal cushion and the victory.
The teams wrap up the series on Saturday afternoon.
