Vikings let lead slip away against Saint Mary's

APPLETON, Wis. -- The Lawrence University men's hockey team saw a two-goal lead against Saint Mary's University slip away Tuesday, and the Cardinals went on to a 6-3 nonconference victory at the Appleton Ice Center.
Lawrence led 2-0 after the first period and was up 3-1 with five minutes left in the second period the Cardinals stormed back. Saint Mary's tied the game at 3-3 heading to the third and then scored three times in the final period to pull away.
The Vikings grabbed the lead just 1:25 into the opening period when Jordan Cooper scored off a pass from behind the net by Zach Lodes. It was Cooper's second goal of the season, and Ivan Galaguzov also picked up an assist.
Lawrence made it 2-0 on the power play later in the first period. Dante Terramani took a pass from Hugh Anderson and his shot was redirected by Jack Michels past Saint Mary's goaltender Matt Sankner at the 13:15 mark.
Saint Mary's (6-6-1) scored early in the second period to cut the lead in half, but the Vikings pushed the lead back to a two-goal advantage later in the second.
The Vikings had a two-man advantage on the power play when Cory Checco scored off passes from Jayden Jensen and Kyle Gierman at the 14:23  mark for a 3-1 edge.
The lead evaporated quickly after a turnover near the Lawrence net allowed Nikita Sheberov to score. The Cardinals then scored on the power play just over a minute later and the game was tied 3-3.
Lawrence was whistled for two penalties less than 20 seconds apart to give Saint Mary's a two-man advantage. The Cardinals scored on the power play at the 8:46 mark to take a 4-3 lead, and Sheberov then scored at 14:23 for a 5-3 edge. The Cardinals added an empty-net goal to complete the scoring.
Brian Tallieu stopped 29 shots for the Vikings (2-10-1), and that included a save on a penalty shot late in the second period. Sankner finished with 20 saves for Saint Mary's.
Lawrence returns to action on Friday when the Vikings begin a two-game series with Adrian College.
