Balance, defense lead Vikings to victory at Grinnell

GRINNELL, Iowa -- The Lawrence University men's basketball team had five players score in double figures Saturday en route to a 93-83 Midwest Conference victory over Grinnell College at Darby Gymnasium.
Lawrence (6-9, 3-3 MWC) also held the high-scoring Pioneers to 17 points below their average entering the game. The Vikings defense limited Grinnell to 36.3 percent shooting from the floor, including a tepid 9-for-39 (23.1 percent) from 3-point range.
Rookie forward Nick Hesch came off the bench to lead Lawrence with a double-double of 18 points and 11 rebounds. Hesch went 8-for-11 from the floor in 25 minutes of action. Matthew Kaznikov added 16 points, three rebounds and two assists for the Vikings.
Adnan Sarancic also posted a double-double for Lawrence with 13 points and 12 rebounds, and Elliot Jung added 13 points and three rebounds. First-year guard Ryne Panzer chipped in with 12 points, three rebounds and two assists for the Vikings, and fellow rookie guard Johnny Semany grabbed 10 rebounds to go with his seven points and five assists.
Lawrence shot just 48.5 percent from the floor, but the Vikings had a big advantage at the foul line. The Vikings went 25-for-36 at the stripe, compared to 16-for-23 for the Pioneers (6-8, 2-4).
Lawrence got off to a good start as the Vikings built a 14-2 lead less than seven minutes into the game. Grinnell started the game 1-for-14 from the floor and committed four turnovers in the first seven minutes.
Grinnell managed to trim the lead to 33-27 with just over five minutes left in the opening half, but the Vikings closed the first half on a 13-4 run. Kaznikov had four points and four others scored in the burst to give Lawrence a 46-31 lead at the break.
Lawrence wasn't able to pull away, and the Pioneers closed to 63-60 with 7:26 left in the game. Hesch countered with a layup and that sparked an 8-0 run. Jung and Semany both hit a pair of free throws and Sarancic capped the outburst with a layup for a 71-60 lead.
Grinnell fought back to cut the lead back to 73-69, but the Vikings responded with a 12-1 run. Hesch scored seven points and Jung added three as the Vikings built the advantage to 85-70 with 2:17 remaining.
The Pioneers never got closer than eight points the rest of the way.
Aiden Gilbert led Grinnell with 37 points as he went 13-for-26 from the floor.
The victory marked a sweep for the Vikings of the season series with Grinnell. That's the first time Lawrence has swept the season series against the Pioneers since the 2007-08 season.
