APPLETON, Wis. -- The Lawrence University men's soccer team had to settle for a 1-1 tie with Beloit College on Tuesday in a Midwest Conference match on Ron Roberts Field at the Banta Bowl.
The Vikings scored on a pretty goal in the first half, and Beloit played a man down for more than 47 minutes. Lawrence had three outstanding scoring chances in the second half but couldn't cash in.
Before Lawrence got its goal in the opening half, Beloit goalkeeper Brock Bidwell picked up a red card at the 42:24 mark when he tackled one of the Vikings who would have had a clear path to the goal.Â
Lawrence quickly took advantage of the situation with backup goalkeeper Henry Amini in net. Playing off a beautiful backheel pass from
Anthonio Obiegbunam,
Evan Toth beat Amini to give Lawrence a 1-0 lead with just 45 seconds left in the opening half. It was the first collegiate goal for Toth, a sophomore forward.
Beloit bounced back early in the second half when Emilio Mendoza tied the game with a goal just 1:18 into the half.Â
Lawrence nearly took the lead back just over a minute later when
Leo DeCorte's shot hit the post. The rebound came to Lawrence's
Nikita Studinskyi, but his header went over the crossbar.Â
The Vikings had another great chance off a set piece with just over 10 minutes left. Lawrence played the ball to the front of the box, and
Ellison McLane's shot hit the left post and caromed away.Â
Lawrence posted a 19-12 edge in shots for the match.
 Â
Ethan Uribe made eight saves for the Vikings, and Amini and Bidwell had one save apiece.
