APPLETON, Wis. --
Delaney Kingsland recorded the first hat trick in Lawrence University women's hockey history Saturday, but the Vikings came up just short in a 4-3 Northern Collegiate Hockey Association setback to Concordia University Wisconsin at the Champion Center.
Kingsland scored in the opening period and then added two more in third to spark a Lawrence comeback.Â
Kingsland tied the game midway through the first period with her first goal of the season off a pass from
Sofia Alvarez. Concordia (3-5-0, 3-3-0 NCHA) seized control of the game with three goals in the second period to lead 4-1 heading to the third. Kingsland nearly had another goal late in the second period when her shot went ringing off the crossbar.Â
The Vikings (0-6-0, 0-4-0) trimmed the advantage to 4-2 when Kingsland scored off assists from
Sophia Labrecque and
Lauren Askenazy just 3:49 into the third period. Kingsland pulled the Vikings to within one when she scored off a pass from Askenazy at the 12:58 mark.
The Falcons then took a body checking penalty seconds after the Lawrence goal, but the Vikings were unable to cash in on the ensuing power play.
Lawrence made a last-ditch effort by pulling goaltender
Sydney Seeley for the final 1:21, but Concordia held on for the win.
Seeley finished with 23 saves, and Kami McCardle stopped 21 shots for the Falcons. Concordia had a 27-24 edge in shots for the game.
