Lawrence storms back to spear Muskies

PLYMOUTH, Wis. -- The Lawrence University women's basketball team roared back from a 14-point fourth-quarter deficit Saturday to post a 68-66 nonconference win over Lakeland University at Woltzen Gymnasium.
Mallory Meyer put the Vikings ahead for the first time in the game with 19 seconds left, and Lakeland's driving layup to tie the game came after the final buzzer had sounded. Lawrence held Lakeland without a point for the final 6:13 of the game.
Charlotte Brennan led Lawrence (4-1) with 19 points as she went 7-for-9 from the floor before fouling out. Meyer scored 17 points on 6-for-11 shooting from the floor and added five rebounds and two assists.
Maggie Culver had 13 points for the Vikings and added six rebounds and three steals. Lydia Lueck picked up 12 points, handed out for assists and grabbed three rebounds for Lawrence.
The Vikings trailed from the start and were down 11 points just six minutes into the game. The margin stayed that way throughout the first half, and Lakeland built a 41-26 lead at the half.
Lawrence was down by as many as 18 points in the third quarter and were down 62-48 with 8:29 left in the contest.
The Vikings then started chipping away at the lead, starting with Lueck's layup to cut the margin to 66-55 with 5:15 left. Brennan added a pair of free throws, and Meyer's fastbreak layup cut the lead to 66-59 with 4:07 remaining.
After a Meyer free throw, Culver hit a jumper and then drained a 3-pointer to cut the lead to 66-65 with 2:17 left.
The teams then traded misses before Lakeland turned it over. The Vikings missed a pair of shots, but Meyer and Culver both grabbed offensive rebounds to keep the possession.
Meyer's short jumper in the lane with 19 seconds remaining finally put the Vikings ahead 67-66. Lakeland's Alexis Johnson missed a layup on the ensuing possession, and Meyer grabbed the rebound.
Meyer was fouled with five seconds left and made one free throw to give Lawrence a 68-66 edge. The Muskies advanced the ball to the frontcourt with a timeout, but the inbounds play took just a tick too long to develop and the basket that would have tied the game came too late.
Lawrence outscored Lakeland 22-8 in the fourth quarter and held the Muskies to just 3-for-13 shooting from the floor over the final 10 minutes.
Lawrence returns to action Tuesday when it begins Midwest Conference play against Beloit College.
