Vikings come up short in second half at Knox

GALESBURG, Ill. -- The Lawrence University football team was outscored by 14 points in the second half Saturday, and that allowed Knox College to pull away for a 48-28 Midwest Conference victory at the Knosher Bowl.
Knox took the lead with a touchdown in the final minute of the first half and then pulled away over the final two quarters.
Lawrence quarterback Aidan Williams hit career highs for completions, passing yards, touchdown passes and threw the longest touchdown pass of his career. Williams completed 25-of-34 passes for 378 yards and four touchdowns. Williams threw for the most yards in a game for a Lawrence quarterback since Luke Barthelmess threw for 386 against Knox in 2012. The four touchdown passes are the most for a Lawrence quarterback since D'Andre Weaver threw four against Beloit College in 2021.
Wide receiver Alex Lippert also had a big day as he caught 10 passes for 195 yards and three touchdowns for the Vikings. Logan Olson grabbed nine passes for 97 yards for the Vikings. First-year running back Jack Delzer had a 12-yard touchdown catch for his first collegiate score.
The Lawrence defense had trouble containing Knox quarterback Kaile Williams, who ran 27 times for 258 yards and five touchdowns. Knox piled up 487 rushing yards on the afternoon.
Linebacker Chris Lozano led the Lawrence defense with eight tackles and recovered a fumble. Kolbe Gelvin, Carter Rivers and Zekhi Mills had six tackles apiece, and Rivers recorded a tackle for loss.
Lozano got Lawrence's first scoring drive started when he recovered a Knox fumble at the Lawrence 26-yard line. Three plays later, Williams hit Lippert with a 69-yard scoring pass, the Vikings' longest scoring play of the season, to give Lawrence a 7-0 lead in the first quarter.
After Knox evened the score, the Vikings put together another scoring drive. Brody Roberts grabbed a 27-yard pass to the Knox 39, and a roughing the passer penalty helped move the ball to the Knox 12. Delzer then caught his first career touchdown pass on the next play for a 14-7 lead. Knox countered with a scoring drive of its down but missed the extra point and trailed 14-13.
The Vikings marched right back down the field on its next possession. A pair of completions to Olson moved the ball to Knox 48, and Williams then hit Lippert with a 48-yard touchdown pass to give Lawrence a 21-13 lead with 13:47 left in the first half.
Knox countered with a pair of scoring drives to take a 27-21 lead with 36 seconds left in the opening half. Lawrence benefited from a pair of Knox penalties and then completed passes to Jackson Barbour and Olson for a first down at the Knox 11. The Vikings missed a field goal on the final play of the opening half.
The Prairie Fire scored on its opening two possessions of the second half to build a 41-21 lead, and the Vikings sandwiched a punt around a pair of interceptions. Knox added another score midway through the fourth quarter.
Lawrence put together its only scoring drive of the second half with Olson catching a pair of passes for first downs and Williams running for another first down. The Vikings capped the drive when Williams found Lippert with an 18-yard touchdown pass with 3:40 remaining.
Lawrence wraps up its season next Saturday when they host Ripon College.
