Vikings earn doubleheader split with Hope

    DAVENPORT, Fla. -- The Lawrence University baseball team opened its spring break trip to Florida with a nonconference doubleheader split against Hope College.
    Lawrence won the second game 5-2 after Hope took the opener 6-0.
    In the nightcap, Lawrence (4-3) scored five runs on just three hits and rode a quality start from Nick Katz, who improved to 2-0 on the season.
    Parker Knoll was the only Lawrence player with more than one hit as he went 2-for-3 and drove in a run. 
    Lawrence broke a scoreless tie with a pair of runs in the bottom of the third. Alex Tanaka started the inning with a walk, and Jeremy Peddle reached on an error to put runners at second and third. Knoll singled to score Tanaka for a 1-0 edge, and Taylor Freeman reached on an error to score Peddle for a 2-0 advantage.
    Hope (4-6) tied it with a pair of runs in the sixth, but the Vikings struck back in the bottom half of the frame.
    Edan Perez walked to open the inning, but after two outs, Quinn Berglin walked. Tanaka followed with a single to score Perez for a 3-2 lead. Peddle then reached an an error and both runners came home to score for a 5-2 edge.
    Shane Foley came on in relief of Katz and retired the Dutchmen in order to record the save. Katz went six innings and allowed two runs on five hits while striking out three with no walks.
    In the opener, the Vikings were no-hit by Hope's Graham O'Gorman. He struck out four and walked five. 
    Elden Santana started for the Vikings and allowed six runs on just four hits. He struck out four and walked three.
