CLERMONT, Fla. -- The Lawrence University softball team dropped an 8-4 nonconference decision to SUNY-Old Westbury on Tuesday at the National Training Center.
Old Westbury got three runs in the second and four in the fifth, and the Panther wriggled out of several jams to stay ahead.
 Â
Mattigan Haller went 3-for-4 with a triple, a run scored and a run driven in for the Vikings (2-10).
Xiomara Rueda-Marshall went 2-for-2 and scored a run, and
Jordan Wallin-Swanson was 2-for-4 for Lawrence.
The Vikings trailed 3-0 when they manufactured a run in the bottom of the third. Rueda-Marshall walked, moved to second on a ground ball and went to third on Haller's infield single.
Mikayla Jeneske's sacrifice fly scored Rueda-Marshall to trim the lead to 3-1.
Lawrence added another run in the fourth after Wallin-Swanson singled with one out. Pinch-runner
Laney Martens moved to third on an error and scored on
Mary Boyle's groundout to cut the lead to 3-2.
Old Westbury pushed the lead to 7-2 in the top of the fifth, but the Vikings battled back in the bottom half of the inning. Haller started the inning with a triple and scored on
Gillian Guerriero's groundout to cut the lead to 7-3.
The Panthers got that run back in the top of the sixth, but the Vikings scored again in the bottom half of the inning.
Lizzy Angemi started that rally with a one-out single, and Rueda-Marshall followed with a single.
Janessa Gonzalez then singled to load the bases. Haller's infield single scored Angemi to cut the lead to 8-4, but a fielder's choice got the Panthers out of the jam.
Lawrence started the seventh with a walk, but Old Westbury retired the next two batters to close out the game.
Rueda-Marshall worked the first 4.2 innings and took the loss. She allowed five earned runs on six hits, struck out two and walked five.
