APPLETON, Wis. -- The Lawrence University baseball team got a pair of outstanding pitching performances Saturday in a Midwest Conference doubleheader split with the University of Chicago at Whiting Field.
Lawrence won the nightcap 9-0 after the Maroons took the opener 1-0.
  In the second game,
Elden Santana tossed seven shutout innings to pick up his third victory of the season. Santana allowed two hits, struck out a career-high 12 and walked just one.Â
 Â
Zach Leslie went 2-for-4 with a two-run homer, two runs batted in and a run scored for the Vikings.
Luke Miles was 2-for-4 with a solo shot, two RBIs and a pair of runs scored for Lawrence.
Parker Knoll was 3-for-5 with two runs scored and an RBI, and
Taylor Freeman went 2-for-5 with a double, a run scored and an RBI.
Lawrence (15-21, 10-13 MWC) scratched out a run in the first when Knoll singled to start the inning and later scored on Freeman's single. The score stayed 1-0 until the bottom of the fifth when Miles smacked a homer down the line in left to give the Vikings a 2-0 edge.
The Vikings then broke the game open against the Chicago bullpen.
Jake Land started the seventh with a double for the Vikings, and Miles followed with a single to score Land and push the lead to 3-0.Â
Miles went to third on a throwing error, and Knoll followed with a single to score Miles for a 4-0 lead. After Knoll swiped second, Eden Perez singled to score Knoll and the lead was 5-0.
William Polanco belted a two-out double to move Perez to third, and
Nick Heerde singled to center to score Perez for a 6-0 advantage.
Lawrence tacked on three more runs in the eighth to put the game away. Freeman's two-out double started the rally, and he moved to third on a wild pitch. A throwing error by the catcher allowed Freeman to score. After Perez walked, Leslie launched a two-run blast to left, and the Vikings led 9-0.
  In the opener,
Quinn Berglin went eight innings, struck out eight and walked two for the Vikings. Berglin allowed just five hits, including four infield singles, and no earned runs.
The only run scored in the game came in the seventh for Chicago (23-16, 14-9) on two infield singles, a throwing error and a squeeze bunt.
Chicago starter Drew Bryan went 7.2 innings, allowed three hits, struck out 15 and walked one. Perez had two of Lawrence's hits against Bryan.
The teams wrap up the series with one game Sunday at Whiting Field.
