Askenazy's late goal gives Lawrence victory over Spartans

APPLETON, Wis. -- Lauren Askenazy scored on the power play with 1:32 left in regulation Friday to give the Lawrence University women's hockey team a 1-0 Northern Collegiate Hockey Association victory over the University of Dubuque at the Fox Cities Champion Center.
Dubuque was already on the penalty kill and had nearly killed off a penalty when the Spartans were whistled for cross checking with 2:15 remaining in regulation. The Spartans survived Lawrence's brief two-player advantage, but the Vikings cashed in 43 seconds into the game's final power play.
Askenazy corralled the puck in the slot and fired it past Savannah Wuitschick with 1:32 left for the game's only goal. Delaney Kingsland and Evelyn Pryadkin both picked up assists on the game-winner, which was Askenazy's fourth goal of the season.
The Spartans pulled their goaltender for the final 1:12, but Lawrence was able to clear the puck from its zone multiple times to ensure the victory.
Rookie goaltender Sarah Dobrzynski picked up her first career victory and shutout for the Vikings. She stopped 29 shots, including 13 in the opening period when Dubuque pressed the attack. Wuitschick made 33 saves and took the loss.
Lawrence finished 1-for-3 on the power play, and Dubuque went 0-for-4.
The Vikings finished with a 34-29 edge in shots. After a slow start, Lawrence out-shot the Spartans 29-16 over the final two periods.
Lawrence wraps up the series with the Spartans on Saturday afternoon.
