APPLETON, Wis. -- The Lawrence University women's hockey team took the lead in the second period Saturday and refused to give it up in a 4-2 Northern Collegiate Hockey Association victory over a pesky University of Dubuque squad at the Fox Cities Champion Center.
The Vikings scored twice in the second period to take the lead for good, and Lawrence got an outstanding effort from senior goaltender
Sydney Seeley on Senior Day.
Seeley made 37 saves, stopped a pair of breakaways and withstood pressure in the final minutes as Dubuque brought an extra attacker on the ice and had a short power play.Â
Lawrence (3-14-1, 2-8-0 NCHA), which posted a 1-0 victory on Friday and swept the weekend series, jumped on top midway through the opening period.
Sofia Alvarez scored her fifth goal of the season with a snipe past Dubuque goalie Savannah Wuitschick at the 9:49 mark.
Gigi Wood, who sent a long pass up the ice to Alvarez, and Seeley picked up assists on the play.
Dubuque (2-16-0, 2-8-0) tied the game a few seconds later, but Lawrence grabbed the advantage in the second period.

Valeria Ansoleaga, who made a number of strong plays defensively, scored her first collegiate goal off an assist by
Delaney Kingsland at the 6:02 mark of the second for a 2-1 edge. Kingsland then scored on the power play off passes by
Lauren Askenazy and
Evelyn Pryadkin at 7:01 for a 3-1 advantage. Lawrence went 1-for-5 on the power play, and Dubuque was 0-for-4.
The Spartans cut into the lead with a goal at the 9:12 mark, but Lawrence held a 3-2 lead heading to the third period.
 Â
Lindsey Gulliksen gave Lawrence some cushion when she scored at the 13:25 mark of the third off passes from
Aislinn O'Hagan and Alvarez for a 4-2 edge.
The Spartans pulled Wuitschick for an extra attacker with more than two minutes left in regulation, but Lawrence withstood the pressure. Seeley made several saves in the final two minutes to preserve the advantage and seal the victory. Wuitschick finished with 23 saves.Â
