Season ends for Vikings in opening round of NCAA Tournament

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. -- The Lawrence University women's soccer team saw its stellar season come to an end Friday with a 4-0 loss to the University of Chicago in the first round of the NCAA Division III Tournament at Zuidema Field.
The Maroons (10-6-2) scored three times in the opening half and added a goal early in the second half to complete the scoring.
Lawrence (15-5-2) was making its fourth NCAA Tournament appearance after claiming a share of the Midwest Conference's regular-season title and winning the Midwest Conference Tournament. The Vikings' 15 wins in 2024 in a school record.
"It's been special," Lawrence coach Joe Sagar said. "I'm so proud of them all as individuals, but they have become bigger and better than themselves and become an elite Lawrence soccer team."
Chicago scored at the 12-minute mark when Mary Stuart Kerrigan's low hard shot found the net after deflecting off the foot of a Lawrence defender right on the goal line. The Maroons doubled their advantage at the 21:56 mark when Indira Naylor beat Lawrence goalkeeper Ella Lysne to the ball and found the open net for a 2-0 lead.
With just 1:31 left in the opening half, Avery Gallucci scored to give Chicago a 3-0 lead at the break.
The Maroons completed the scoring just 3:18 into the second half when Naylor got her second goal of the contest.
Lysne made three saves for the Vikings and faced 22 shots. The Vikings were held to just three shots, and Sophia Sasaki made one save for Chicago.
