APPLETON, Wis. -- The Lawrence University men's hockey team lost a gut-wrenching 3-2 overtime game to No. 7 Adrian College on Saturday at the Appleton Ice Center.
Adrian pulled out the Northern Collegiate Hockey Association victory with a goal from Bradley Somers with just 20 seconds left in overtime.
Lawrence had been on the power play in the five-minute overtime after Ian Amsbaugh was whistled for hooking. The Vikings had multiple quality scoring chances on the power play but
Evan Izenstark was then called for interference with just 1:35 left to put the Bulldogs on the power play.
The Vikings looked like they were going to force a shootout when Somers got his shot just over the shoulder of Lawrence goaltender
Nolan Mahaffey to end the contest with just 20 ticks left.
Lawrence (3-4-1, 2-3-1 NCHA) grabbed the lead early in the second period when
Robby Pustulka scored off assists from
Miles McCue and
Jacob Jakusz at the 1:42 mark. The Vikings doubled that lead when
Adam Brzezicki scored off assists from
Jack Michels and
Will Crull at the 10:30 mark.
Adrian cut the lead to 2-1 on Austin McCarthy's goal at the 14:15 mark of the second and then tied it on Ben Loreto's goal at the 1:47 mark of the third.
Mahaffey finished with 29 saves for the Vikings, and Dershahn Stewart had 32 saves for Adrian (5-3-0, 2-2-0).
