Askenazy's goal gives Vikings OT win over Marian

APPLETON, Wis. -- It may have been Friday the 13th, but luck had nothing to do with the Lawrence University women's hockey team's victory over Marian University. It was all skill.
Lauren Askenazy fired a crisp wrist shot into the upper corner of the net in overtime to give the Vikings a 3-2 nonconference victory over the Sabres at the Fox Cities Champion Center. The win was the fifth of the season for the Vikings, and that is the highest number of wins in a season since the program's inception in 2021.
The game was tied 2-2 headed to the five-minute overtime, and Lawrence goaltender Sarah Dobrzynski made save on a breakaway early in the OT to keep the Vikings alive.
Askenazy took a pass from Sofia Alvarez as she was headed up the right side of the ice. She snapped off a shot that went over the shoulder of Marian goaltender Sydney Magnuson and into the back of the net for the victory with 1:59 left.
Dobrzynski, who also made a huge save late in regulation on a breakaway, finished with 29 saves to get the win. Magnuson stopped 36 shots for the Sabres. Lawrence had a 39-31 edge in shots for the contest.
Lawrence (5-7-1) got on the board early in the second period when Lauren Moravchik scored at the 3:49 mark. Her shot was slightly redirected by a Marian defender and found the corner of the net for a 1-0 lead. Askenazy and Sophia Lebrecque both picked up assists on the goal.
Marian (3-7-0) tied the game at the 14:11 mark of the second and the score remained 1-1 heading to the third. Olivia Church then scored off a turnover to give Marian a 2-1 lead at the 5:54 mark of the third.
The Vikings took advantage of a Marian turnover less than two minutes later when Reese Deibert grabbed a loose puck and beat Magnuson at the 7:35 mark to tie the game at 2-2.
The teams wrap up the series on Saturday at Marian.
