Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Lawrence falls in OT at North Park

CHICAGO, Ill. -- The Lawrence University men's basketball team went cold in overtime on Wednesday and dropped an 80-73 nonconference decision to North Park University.
Lawrence missed the front end of two bonus free throw situations to start the overtime and later missed five consecutive shots from the floor to seal its fate.
Nicholas Gouriotis and Casey Schoenecker led Lawrence's balanced attack with 17 points apiece. Gouriotis went 5-for-9 from 3-point range and added four rebounds. Schoenecker picked up five blocks to tie the Lawrence game record to go with eight rebounds and four assists.
Nathan Valentine, who hit a 3-pointer to force overtime, added 14 points and was 4-for-5 from beyond the arc for Lawrence. Valentine added three rebounds, three assists and three steals. Hogan Demovsky picked up 11 points for Lawrence, and Landon Key was the fifth player in double figures with 10 points.
Long-distance shooting kept Lawrence close as the Vikings went 11-for-24 from beyond the arc. North Park was just 4-for-20 on 3-pointers. North Park made up for it at the foul line as it went 18-for-25 on free throws, compared to 6-for-14 for Lawrence.
Lawrence (4-7) led by as many as seven points in the first half, and North Park (7-3) was up by as many as six before the break. The teams swapped the lead multiple times in the second half, and North Park led 66-62 with 3:19 left in regulation.
Gouriotis then drained a 3-pointer to pull Lawrence to 66-65 with 2:17 left. North Park converted a pair of free throws to push the lead back to 68-65 with 19 seconds left, and Lawrence missed a 3-pointer on the ensuing possession.
Lawrence was forced to foul, but North Park missed the front end of the bonus. Demovsky grabbed the rebound, and after a timeout, he found Valentine on his left. Valentine hit a 3-pointer with one second left to tie the game and force overtime.
North Park hit its first four shots from the floor in the overtime, and Lawrence missed the front end of a pair of critical bonus free throw situations. That allowed North Park to pull out to a 77-70 with Lawrence's only basket coming on Schoenecker's layup. Lawrence then missed its next five shots from the floor, and North Park pulled away for the win.
Lawrence returns to action on Saturday when the Vikings host Dominican University.
