Frigid shooting dooms Vikings in loss to Simpson

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. -- The Lawrence University women's basketball team went ice cold in the second half Saturday and dropped a 69-50 nonconference decision to Simpson College in the Daytona Beach Shootout at the Ocean Center.
Lawrence (7-4) shot just 16.7 percent from the floor (5-30) in the second half, including 0-for-10 from 3-point range. The Vikings had been rock solid in the first half as they went 15-for-32 (46.9 percent) from the field in the opening 20 minutes.
Charlotte Brennan was the only Lawrence player in double figures with 10 points. She added five rebounds and htree assists. Sophie Morey had nine points, five rebounds and three assists for the Vikings, and Taylor Svoboda came off the bench to score eight points as she went 4-for-6 from the field.
Lawrence jumped out to a 15-4 lead, capped by Svoboda's layup, to start the game. Simpson had closed that advantage to 19-18 by the end of the first quarter. The teams traded the lead in the second, and Tanner Bost's 3-pointer staked Lawrence to a 35-30 lead at the half.
After Olivia Kesti's three-point play trimmed Simpson's lead to 42-40 midway through the third quarter, Simpson took over. The Storm went on an 11-3 run and led 53-43 after three quarters. Simpson got the first basket of the fourth quarter and slowly pulled away from that point.
Molly Lutmer scored a game-high 21 points for Simpson (6-6).
