Game Recap: Men's Ice Hockey |

Lawrence edged by Thunder in OT

ANGOLA, Ind. -- The Lawrence University men's hockey team nearly pulled off a sweep of No. 9 Trine University, but a late penalty helped the Thunder pull out a 3-2 overtime victory Saturday at Thunder Ice Arena.
Lawrence had knocked off the Thunder 4-2 on Friday night in the series opener.
The Vikings (7-15-1, 3-10-1 NCHA) had tied the game with just over seven minutes remaining in the third to force the overtime. Lawrence was whistled for a five-minute penalty late in regulation, and Trine scored on the power play in overtime. The Vikings still earned a point in the NCHA standings with the overtime game and picked up four points on the weekend.
Jack Michels opened the scoring for Lawrence with an early goal. Michels scored off assists from Cole Schneider and Akhmed Malsagov at the 3:10 mark of the first for a 1-0 lead.
The scored stayed that way until midway through the third when Trine (18-5-0, 13-3-0) scored on the power at the 8:59 mark to tie it at 1-1. Lawrence was whistled for another penalty, and Matteo Ybarra scored his second straight power-play goal to give Trine a 2-1 lead at the 11:53 mark.
That advantage didn't last long as the Vikings struck back quickly. Robby Pustulka scored off assists from PJ Noonan and Cody Brekke at the 12:46 mark to tie it at 2-2.
Lawrence was called for a five-minute penalty with 2:43 left in regulation, but the Vikings forced the game to overtime. Trine remained on the power play and Sam Antenucci scored at the 2:07 mark, just before the penalty was set to expire, to give Trine the win.
Nolan Mahaffey was outstanding in net for the second straight game as he stopped 45 shots for Lawrence. Starting goalie Kyle Kozma was yanked after allowing the goal early in the first, and Shane Brancato played the remainder of the game for Trine.
