Lawrence comes up short in slugfest with Clarkson

DAVENPORT, Fla. -- The Lawrence University baseball team mounted a big rally Tuesday but came up just short in a 13-12 nonconference loss to Clarkson University at Northeast Regional Park.
The Vikings trailed 5-1 to start the game before rallying to tie the game at 5-5. Lawrence then fell behind 11-5 before cutting the deficit to just one heading to the ninth inning.
Jacob Charon went 3-for-6 with a homer, scored a run and drove in three for the Vikings (8-5). Zach Leslie went 4-for-4, drove in a run and scored a run as part of Lawrence's 18-hit attack.
Lawrence's Nick Heerde went 3-for-5 and scored twice, and Tate Hartlaub and Edan Perez both had two hits. Hartlaub drove in a pair and scored a run, and Perez drove in a run.
Lawrence trailed 5-1 but picked up a run in the third and added three more in the fourth inning. William Polanco's fielder's choice scored the first run in the fourth, and Hartlaub squeezed home a run to cut the lead to 5-4. Perez then singled to score Heerde, and the game was tied at 5-5.
The Golden Knights (6-3) scored six times on four hits, including a bases-loaded double, to pull out to an 11-5 advantage heading to the fifth.
Charon homered to lead off the fifth and cut the deficit to 11-6. Lawrence tacked on another run in the sixth and picked up three more in the seventh. Polanco had a run-scoring single in the seventh, Hartlaub picked up a sacrifice fly and an error allowed another run to score to cut the margin to 13-10.
Quinn Berglin and Leslie both had run-scoring singles in the eighth, and the Vikings trimmed the margin to 13-12 heading to the final inning. Hartlaub and Perez both had one-out singles to put the tying and go-ahead runs on base, but Clarkson got a pair of strikeouts to end the threat.
Lawrence returns to action on Wednesday when the Vikings face Middlebury College.
