CLERMONT, Fla. -- The Lawrence University softball team used timely hitting and a solid pitching performance to post a 9-5 nonconference victory over SUNY-Brockport on Thursday.

Xiomara Rueda-Marshall allowed seven hits and no earned runs over 5.1 innings, struck out three and didn't walk a batter to improve to 1-1 on the season.Â

Kourtney Mercer went 2-for-3 with two doubles, drove in three runs and scored twice to pace the Vikings (5-9). Lawrence's
Jordan Wallin-Swanson went 3-for-4 and drove in a pair of runs.
Zoe Doherty and
Khayla Santiago both scored a pair of runs for the Vikings.
  Lawrence jumped on Brockport (2-8) in the bottom of the first with a pair of runs. Mercer doubled to score Doherty, and Wallin-Swanson followed with a single to score Mercer for a 2-0 advantage.
  The Vikings were up 2-1 when they tacked on a run in the third.
Mattigan Haller started the inning with a single and swiped second. Mercer walked with one out, but Haller was caught trying to steal third to put the scoring chance in jeopardy. Wallin-Swanson came through with a clutch two-out single to score Mercer for a 3-1 lead.
  Lawrence broke the game open with four runs in the fourth. Walks to Santiago and
Adrie Villa got things started, and Doherty singled to score Santiago for a 4-1 lead. Haller then reached on a fielder's choice that allowed Villa to score for a 5-1 advantage.
Janessa Gonzalez followed with a single to score Doherty for a 6-1 lead. Mercer then delivered with a two-run double to give the Vikings an 8-1 advantage.
  Brockport got a run back in the top of the fifth, but the Vikings countered with one of their own in the bottom half of the inning. Villa delivered a run-scoring single for a 9-2 advantage.
  The Golden Eagles countered with three runs in the sixth, but
Lizzy Angemi came on in relief for Lawrence. After giving up a two-run single and a walk, Angemi worked around an error, and Brockport left the bases loaded.

Avery Chilson came on to pitch the seventh for Lawrence and worked around a two-out single to close out the game.
  Lawrence wraps up its spring break trip on Friday with a pair of games. Â
