Lawrence drops pair to Rams

    MOUNT VERNON, Iowa -- The Lawrence University softball team dropped both ends of a Midwest Conference doubleheader to Cornell College on Saturday at Van Metre Field.
    Cornell won the opener 8-0 in six innings and then took the nightcap 2-0 despite being held to just two hits.
    In the second game, Cornell scored  both of its runs in the first inning on a pair of hit batters, two errors and a sacrifice fly. 
    Lawrence starter Avery Chilson allowed just two hits in six innings of work. She gave up a single in the fifth and a single in the sixth. Chilson struck out four and walked one. 
    Lawrence couldn't break through against Hannah Rhoades, who allowed five hits and went the distance for the Rams. The Vikings stranded runners in scoring position in the first, third, fourth and seventh innings. The Vikings left six runners on base.
    Mattigan Haller and Jordan Wallin-Swanson both went 2-for-3 to pace the Vikings. 
    In the opening game, Cornell grabbed the early lead and then struck for three runs in fourth and sixth innings to put the game away.
    Lexi Ellermeier tossed a five-hit shutout for the Rams.
    Lawrence was held to five hits with Haller going 2-for-3 to lead the Vikings.
