Vikings walk-off Beloit to complete doubleheader sweep

FOX CROSSING, Wis. -- The Lawrence University softball team grabbed a pair of come-from-behind victories Saturday in a Midwest Conference doubleheader with Beloit College at Zephyr Field.
Lawrence trailed by two in the opener before coming back for a 7-6 win, and the Vikings scored two in the bottom of the seventh for a walk-off, 9-8 victory to complete the sweep.
In the second game, Lawrence (11-15, 3-5 MWC) trailed 7-2 after a flurry of errors early in the game put the Vikings in the hole.
Doubles by Mary Boyle and Zoe Doherty plated a run in the second to cut the lead to 7-3, and the Vikings struck for two more runs in the fourth. Janessa Gonzalez's single scored Taylor Hughes, and Kourtney Mercer was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded to score Doherty to cut the lead to 7-5.
Lawrence tied it with a pair of runs in the fifth as Mattigan Haller's run-scoring double plated Adrie Villa, and Doherty's sacrifice fly scored pinch-runner Laney Martens to knot the game at 7-7.
Beloit (5-23, 2-8) grabbed an 8-7 lead with a run in the top of the sixth, but the Vikings had some more magic left in the tank.
Haller started the winning rally with a one-out single in the bottom of the seventh. After Haller swiped second, Doherty singled to put runners at the corners. Gonzalez then walked to load the bases. Jordan Wallin-Swanson hit a sharp single up the middle off the glove of shortstop Angela Donath to score both Haller and Doherty for the victory.
Doherty went 3-for-4 with a double, drove in two runs and scored twice. Haller was 3-for-5 with two doubles, scored twice and drove in a run. Gonzalez was 2-for-4 with two runs batted in, and Mercer and Wallin-Swanson both finished with a pair of RBIs.
Lizzy Angemi made the start and allowed six hits and just one earned run through five innings. Avery Chilson worked the final two innings to pick up the win.
In the opener, Gonzalez went 2-for-4 with a double and drove in two runs, and Chilson was 2-for-3. Gillian Guerriero doubled and drove in a pair of runs for the Vikings.
Chilson went the distance, allowing six runs on eight hits with five strikeouts and one walk to pick up the win.
Lawrence grabbed a 3-1 lead in the bottom of the first as Guerriero delivered a two-run double. Beloit then scored four in the second, but Gonzalez's RBI double trimmed the deficit to 5-4 after two innings. Beloit pushed the lead to 6-4 before Boyle's RBI double in the fourth cut the lead back to 6-5.
The Vikings finally grabbed the lead back with two runs in the sixth. Lawrence put runners at the corners with two outs, and a passed ball allowed Chilson to score and tie the game. Gonzalez followed with a single to right field to score Doherty for a 7-6 advantage.
Chilson then worked a perfect seventh to close out the victory.
Lawrence returns to action on Sunday when it faces Knox College in a doubleheader at St. Norbert College.
