Lawrence drops pair to Red Hawks

APPLETON, Wis. -- The Lawrence University softball dropped both games of a Midwest Conference doubleheader to Ripon College on Thursday at Whiting Field.
Ripon won the opener 2-1 and took the second game 9-5.
In the first game, Ripon pitcher Kalen Berger scattered nine hits over seven innings to get the win. Avery Chilson was very good for the Vikings as she allowed just five hits and no earned runs. Chilson struck out two and walked two.
Lawrence led 1-0 when Chilson singled to score Gillian Guerriero for a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the second. Ripon scored unearned runs in the third and fifth to take the lead.
The Vikings had several scoring chances, and nearly tied the game in the bottom of the seventh. Zoe Doherty doubled with two outs, and Janessa Gonzalez singled to right field. Doherty was thrown out at the plate on a close play to end the game.
Gonzalez and Guerriero both went 2-for-3 for the Vikings (13-17, 5-7 MWC).
In the second game, Ripon broke the game open with six runs in the final two innings.
Mattigan Haller went 2-for-4 with a double and a home run to pace the Vikings.
Lawrence trailed 2-1 when Haller homered to tie the game in the bottom of the third. Ripon grabbed the lead back in the top of the fifth, and the Red Hawks pulled away with four runs in the sixth and two more in the seventh.
Lizzy Angemi allowed three runs on five hits over 4.1 innings and took the loss for Lawrence. Kenzie Pahang allowed five runs on six hits in seven innings to get the win.
