Vikings sweep Monmouth to clinch MWC championship

MONMOUTH, Ill. -- The Lawrence University baseball must have warmed up to some Bachman-Turnver Overdrive on Saturday because it was all about taking care of business for the Vikings.
Lawrence swept a Midwest Conference doubleheader from Monmouth College at Glasgow Field by the scores of 10-2 and 6-1 to claim the conference championship.
The Vikings (29-9, 19-3 MWC) won the title for the second time in three years after claiming the crown in 2022. Lawrence now has six Midwest Conference baseball championships to its credit. Lawrence will host the four-team conference tournament on May 10-11 at Whiting FIeld. The University of Chicago and Beloit College have also clinched berths, and the fourth team is yet to be determined.
In the first game, the Vikings jumped on top early and never let up. Lawrence scored nine of its 10 runs in the opening four innings.
Taylor Freeman went 2-for-5 with a pair of home runs, drove in two runs and scored twice for the Vikings. Parker Knoll went 2-for-5 with a homer, drove in a run and scored three times, and Zach Leslie was 2-for-4 with a homer, three runs batted in and two runs scored.
Jacob Charon went 3-for-4 with a double, two runs scored and one driven in, and William Zatkowski was 2-for-5 with a run scored and one RBI.
Quinn Berglin made the start and went five strong innings to get the win. He allowed just one earned run on five hits, struck out nine and walked two. Cam Ruth pitched four innings of one-hit relief with three strikeouts and three walks to get the save.
Lawrence scored two in the top of the first as Freeman led off the game with a home run. The Vikings added two more in the second as Freeman and Knoll hit back-to-back homers for a 4-0 lead.
William Polanco made it 6-0 with a two-run double in the third before Monmouth got on the board with two runs in the bottom half of the inning. Lawrence stretched the lead on Leslie's three-run homer in the fourth for a 9-2 lead.
Berglin and Ruth shut Monmouth down from there to close out the win.
In the second game, Lawrence pulled away late with three runs in the top of the seventh.
Freeman went 3-for-5 with three runs scored and one RBI, and Knoll went 2-for-5 with a triple, two RBIs and a run scored. Leslie went 2-for-4 with a double and three RBIs, and Nick Heerde went 2-for-4 with a double and two runs scored.
Elden Santana started for Lawrence and allowed only two hits and no earned runs over seven innings. He struck out 12 and walked one.
Lawrence scored in the first on Leslie's run-scoring single, and Parker Knoll's two-run triple gave Lawrence a 3-0 lead in the fifth. The Scots trimmed the lead to 3-1, but the Vikings pulled away in the seventh.
Freeman had a run-scoring single, and Leslie smacked a two-run double to give Lawrence a 6-1 lead.
