Lawrence falls to Sabres in season finale

APPLETON, Wis. -- The Lawrence University softball team dropped a nonconference doubleheader to Marian University on Monday at Whiting Field.
Marian won the opener 14-2 in five innings, and the Sabres rallied to win the nightcap 10-6. This doubleheader started back on April 1 but was stopped in the top of the second inning of the first game due to rain.
In the second game, Mattigan Haller went 2-for-4 with a triple and a homer, drove in two runs and scored once to lead the Vikings. Adrie Villa doubled and drove in two runs, Zoe Doherty drove in a pair of runs and Khayla Santiago scored twice and made a spectacular diving catch in foul territory in right field.
Lawrence (14-24) trailed 3-0 heading to the bottom of the fifth when the Vikings struck for five runs. With two outs and the bases empty, Santiago and Laney Martens both singled. Villa followed with a two-run double, and Doherty then singled to tie the game at 3-3. Haller then blasted a homer to right, and the Vikings led 5-3.
Marian (22-18) came back to score four in the top of the sixth and three more in the seventh to take control.
Avery Chilson went the distance and took the loss for the Vikings but finished her rookie campaign with 10 victories.
In the opener, Marian broke the game open with three runs in the fourth and seven more in the fifth to close it out. The Sabres put together an 11-hit attack against a pair of Lawrence pitchers.
The Vikings were limited to four hits by a pair of Marian pitchers. Haller, Doherty, Martens and Mary Boyle all had hits for the Vikings.
