Lawrence drops thriller at Saint Mary's

WINONA, Minn. -- The Lawrence University men's hockey team dropped a tight 3-2 nonconference decision at Saint Mary's University on Saturday night.
Jacob Jakusz and Cody Brekke both scored for the Vikings, and Miles McCue and Ethan Beaumont both picked up assists for Lawrence (3-9-2).
Ken Turelli made 41 saves for the Vikings, and A.J. Ruskowski made 27 saves for Saint Mary's (6-3-1).
Lawrence took the early lead on Brekke's goal off a pass from McCue at the 10:08 mark of the opening period. The Cardinals tied it quickly on Nathan Solis' power-play goal just 1:28 later.
The score stayed 1-1 until the third period when Jakusz put the Vikings back on top. He scored off a pass from Beaumont at the 3:11 mark to give Lawrence a 2-1 advantage.
Colin Tushie then tied it on a power-play goal at the 6:50 mark, and a power-play goal from Solis gave Saint Mary's a 3-2 lead at the 7:39 mark. The Cardinals were 3-for-7 on the power play, and Lawrence was 0-for-2.
Lawrence had a chance to tie it late when Saint Mary's Warner Young was whistled for charging with 59 seconds left. The Vikings pulled Turelli so Lawrence had a two-man advantage for the final minute.
The Vikings squeezed off three shots in the final minute, but Ruskowski made two saves and the other shot went wide. Saint Mary's had a 44-29 edge in shots for the game.
