Vikings put the clamps on Monmouth

    APPLETON, Wis. -- The Lawrence University women's basketball team turned up the heat defensively on Wednesday en route to a 69-37 Midwest Conference victory over Monmouth College at Alexander Gymnasium.
    Lawrence held Monmouth to 28 percent shooting for the game and to a season-low point total for the season. It also marked the second time this season Lawrence held an opponent to less than 40 points. The Vikings forced 19 Monmouth turnovers, and Charlotte Brennan led the way for Lawrence with three steals.
    Sophie Morey paced the Vikings with 14 points and pulled down six rebounds. Caroline Sharpe added 11 points for Lawrence as she went 4-for-5 from the floor, including 3-for-4 from 3-point range. Josie Chose came off the bench for the Vikings to score 11 points, and she added seven rebounds and three blocks. Maggie Culver pulled down a game-high 10 rebounds for the Vikings (10-4, 4-1 MWC).
    Lawrence pulled away from the Scots in the second quarter with a burst to end the first half. Chose scored four points as part of a 12-2 scoring run over the final six minutes of the second quarter to grab a 33-20 lead at the break.
    The Vikings opened the second half on a 14-1 scoring run and grabbed a 47-21 lead on Kate Adams' fastbreak layup with 5:26 left in the third quarter. Monmouth trimmed the lead to 47-29 after three periods, but the Vikings scored the first 12 points of the fourth to seal the victory.
    The Vikings led by as many as 32 points in the fourth quarter.
    Kynlee Stearns led Monmouth (4-9, 1-3) with 12 points.
