Vanden Acker delivers win over Monmouth

APPLETON, Wis. -- It was Senior Day for the Lawrence University women's tennis team on Saturday, and the Vikings' lone senior sparkled in the spotlight.
Senior Anna Vanden Acker was the final match on the court against Monmouth College, and Vanden Acker grabbed a victory at No. 2 singles to deliver a 4-3 Midwest Conference victory over the Scots.
Vanden Acker defeated Natalie Labicki 7-6 (7-5), 6-4 in a match that went more than two hours.
Lawrence (5-7, 2-4 MWC) started the afternoon match by winning the doubles point. The No. 2 team of Clara Hills and Tess McGlenn rolled to a 6-1 victory for the Vikings, and the No. 3 team of Evie Vacek and Madelena Priest blanked Monmouth 6-0.
Lawrence's Sky Shinohara romped to a 6-1, 6-0 win at No. 5 singles, and Logan Kane was a 6-0, 6-3 winner at No. 3 to give the Vikings three points.
With Vanden Acker and Labicki the last match on the court, it became a winner-take-all scenario. Vanden Acker rallied in the first set to force a tiebreaker and seized the opening set. In the second set, Labicki grabbed a 2-1 lead, but Vanden Acker stormed back to win the next four games for a 5-2 advantage.
Labicki rallied to win the next two games to cut the margin to 5-4, but Vanden Acker was then serving to win the match. Vanden Acker trailed 30-40 but won the next point for 40-all. A marathon point ensued, and Labicki hit the ball into the net to give Vanden Acker and the Vikings the victory.
Lawrence returns to action next weekend when the Vikings travel to the Midwest Conference Championships.
