Vikings take 2nd in Superior Shoot out

SUPERIOR, Wis. — Lawrence University (2-8-0) was defeated by the University of Dubuque (4-6-0), 5-1, at a neutral site in Superior. The Vikings managed an early goal in the first period, but Dubuque controlled the game, scoring twice in the final period to secure the win.

The first period opened with the Spartans gaining an early advantage as Matt Downie scored a power-play goal at 13:11, assisted by Jack Paweski and Max Erstad. Dubuque extended their lead with an even-strength goal by Nikita Borodayenko at 6:53, assisted by Jesse English and Aleksey Zielinski. Despite falling behind, the Vikings responded late in the period when Ben Winkelmann scored at 00:16, assisted by Cade Dewolf and Jayden Jensen, closing the gap to 2-1. Notably, Jayden Jensen's performance throughout the tournament earned him a spot on the All Tournament team. The period ended with Dubuque leading the Vikings 2-1.

Lawrence struggled to capitalize on numerous opportunities in the second period, maintaining control in the faceoff circle but unable to convert their shots into goals. Despite a power play chance following a slashing penalty against Borodayenko at 4:43, Lawrence's efforts were thwarted by Dubuque's defense and goaltending. Dubuque extended their lead with a goal by Paweski, assisted by Tyler Dale and Brock Weimer, at 14:25. The period concluded with Dubuque leading 3-1.

The Vikings started the third period with aggressive play, taking multiple shots on goal. Carter Cloutier and Evan Izenstark each attempted to challenge Dubuque's defense early but were thwarted by the visiting goaltender, Dazza Mitchell. Despite Lawrence's efforts, Dubuque extended their lead at 16:03 with a goal by Weimer, assisted by Dale and Paweski.

The home team continued to battle, frequently controlling the puck and creating opportunities, including a shot by Nicholas Townsend that hit the pipe. However, Dubuque sealed the game with an empty-net goal by Weimer at 1:03. The period ended with Dubuque ahead, 5-1, concluding the game.
