Vikings shoot down Cornell

APPLETON, Wis. -- The Lawrence University women's basketball team was effective from long range Saturday and used that to roll to a 78-56 Midwest Conference victory over Cornell College at Alexander Gymnasium.
Lawrence went 11-for-24 from beyond the arc with Kate Adams leading the way. Adams went 5-for-8 on 3-pointers on her way to a game-high 21 points. Adams finished 8-for-11 from the floor.
Mallory Meyer finished with 14 points and a team-high seven rebounds to go with two assists and two steals for the Vikings (18-6, 12-3 MWC). Meyer now has 987 career points and moved past Katherine Lofgren (975) for sixth place on the Lawrence career list. She is just 13 points from becoming the sixth Lawrence player to score 1,000 points.
Lawrence's Olivia Kesti added 10 points on 4-for-5 shooting from the floor and added five rebounds. Sophie Morey picked up nine points, four rebounds, three blocks and two assists for the Vikings, and Maggie Culver had eight points, six rebounds, three assists and a pair of steals. Lawrence point guard Charlotte Brennan handed out a game-high six assists to go with four points.
The victory also secured at least the No. 2 seed in the Midwest Conference Tournament, which will be played Feb. 28-March 1.
Erin Knowles led Cornell (12-10, 8-6) with 21 points.
The Vikings built a seven-point lead after the opening quarter, but Lawrence pulled away in the second. Adams hit a 3-pointer to start the second quarter, and Kesti followed with another triple to give the Vikings a 27-14 advantage. The Vikings pushed that lead to 37-19 with 4:32 left in the half before Cornell trimmed the lead to 39-27 at the break.
Cornell closed to 49-42 with just over three minutes left in the third quarter, but Lawrence doubled its advantage over the rest of the period. Lawrence went on a 9-2 run, capped by Meyer's layup, to lead 58-44 heading to the fourth quarter.
The Rams closed to 61-51, but Adams scored on a beautiful driving layup to start a run of second consecutive points. Cornell didn't get closer than 14 points the rest of the way.
Lawrence wraps up the regular season at Ripon next Saturday.
