APPLETON, Wis. --
Miles McCue scored in overtime Saturday to give the Lawrence University men's hockey team a 2-1 Northern Collegiate Hockey Association victory over the University of Dubuque at the Appleton Ice Center.
McCue's goal, his sixth of the season, came 1:20 into the overtime and gave Lawrence a sweep of the weekend series. The Vikings won 4-2 on Friday night.
Lawrence (7-13-2, 6-9-1 NCHA) trailed 1-0 heading to the second period, but
Hayden Johnson tied it for the Vikings. Johnson's goal at the 11:46 mark of the second came off assists from
Alex Hollands and
Tiziano Pauchard.Â
Both teams had scoring chances from that point, and Lawrence was forced to kill off a four-minute power play in the third period. The Vikings held Dubuque (1-19-3, 1-13-2) to 0-for-5 on the power play. Lawrence went 0-for-3 on the power play.
The game went to the 3-on-3, five-minute overtime, and didn't take long for the Vikings to score.
McCue took a pass from Pauchard and found an opening to the left of Dubuque goaltender Erik Chaffe. McCue gave Chaffe a quick fake and then fired the puck into the upper corner of the net for the game-winner.Â
  Lawrence goaltender
Nolan Mahaffey was outstanding in net and made 33 saves to earn the win. Chaffe stopped 27 shots for the Spartans.
The two wins this weekend and the five points the Vikings earned moved them into fifth place in the NCHA standings heading into the final weekend of the regular season.
