Vikings fall short in final minutes at Illinois College

    JACKSONVILLE, Ill. -- The Lawrence University women's basketball team was outscored 17-7 over the final five minutes Saturday and fell 72-67 to Illinois College in a Midwest Conference game at Sherman Gymnasium.
    Lawrence led 60-55 with just over five minutes left, but the Lady Blues went 6-for-10 from the floor down the stretch to grab the lead.
    Kate Adams led Lawrence (16-6, 10-3 MWC) with 14 points, and she added five rebounds. Olivia Kesti came off the bench for the Vikings to score 13 points and grab two rebounds. Mallory Meyer added 11 points, three rebounds, two blocks and two assists. Meyer now has 964 career points and passed Kelly Mulcahy for eighth place on the career scoring list. 
    After Lydia Lueck's 3-pointer gave Lawrence a 60-55 edge with 6:08 left, Kallie Oestreicher countered with back-to-back jumpers for Illinois College to cut the lead to 60-59. Anna McKee then hit a layup to give the Lady Blues a 61-60 edge. 
    Adams tied it with a free throw, but Oestreicher hit a 3-pointer to put the Lady Blues up 64-61. Meyer converted a three-point play with 3:13 left to tie the game at 64-64.
    Oestreicher then hit a 3-pointer, and the Vikings came up empty on their next three trips down the floor. Maggie Culver made one free throw to cut the lead to 67-65 with 1:10 left, but Oestreicher hit another jumper to put the Lady Blues up 69-65.
    After Sophie Morey hit a layup for Lawrence to cut the lead to two with 26 seconds left, the Vikings were forced to foul. McKee made a pair of free throws with 23 seconds left for a 71-67 lead.
    Lawrence turned it over on the next possession and that sealed the win for Illinois College (9-13, 6-7).
    Oestreicher finished with 17 points for the Lady Blues.
