Vikings roll past Williams

DAVENPORT, Fla. -- The Lawrence University baseball team started fast Wednesday and rolled to an 11-2 nonconference win over Williams College at Northeast Regional Park.
The Vikings jumped out to a 5-0 led after two innings and added four more runs in the fourth to pull away.
Lawrence starter Malachi Ross earned his first collegiate victory with five strong innings. Ross allowed one run on four hits while striking out five and walking three. Three Lawrence relievers combined to allow just one run on two hits over the final four innings.
CJ Filipek went 3-for-5 with a home run, three runs batted in and a run scored to pace Lawrence's 11-hit attack. Shane Santaga went 2-for-4 with a double, drove in three runs and scored once for the Vikings. Lawrence lead-off hitter Tate Hartlaub went 2-for-5 and scored a pair of runs.
Lawrence struck for three runs in the first to grab the early lead. Taylor Freeman and Zach Leslie both walked to start the rally, and Santaga followed with a double to score Freeman. Filipek added a two-run single, and the Vikings led 3-0.
The Vikings added two more runs in the second. Hartlaub's single and an error put two runners on base. Leslie's sacrifice fly scored Hartlaub, and Santaga's single scored Edan Perez for a 5-0 edge.
An error started Lawrence's rally in the fourth. Perez followed with a walk, and Freeman delivered a two-run double for a 7-0 lead. Santaga's sacrifice fly plated another run, and Ben Gutowski smacked a run-scoring double for a 9-0 lead.
The Vikings added a run in the fifth on Perez's sacrifice fly, and Filipek blasted a solo homer in the sixth to complete Lawrence's scoring.
Lawrence posted a 4-4 record on its spring break trip, and the Vikings open Midwest Conference play this weekend at Monmouth College.
