Vikings romp to win over Oberlin

CLERMONT, Fla. -- The Lawrence University softball team jumped out to an early lead and romped to an 8-3 nonconference victory over Oberlin College on Thursday at Legends Way.
Lawrence scored three in the first inning, added two more in the fifth and put the game away with three more runs in the seventh.
Jordan Wallin-Swanson went 3-for-4 with two runs batted in and a run scored for the Vikings (5-11). Taylor Hughes and Avery Chilson both went 2-for-4 for Lawrence, and Gillian Guerriero drove in a pair of runs for the Vikings.
Georgia Sedlack went the distance to pick up the victory for Lawrence. Sedlack allowed just two earned runs on eight hits, struck out one and walked one to improve to 3-3 on the season.
Oberlin's starting pitcher failed to record an out as the Vikings scored three times in the first. Zoe Doherty was hit by a pitch to start the inning, and Mattigan Haller followed with a single.
Hughes' bunt single then loaded the bases, and Doherty came in to score on a passed ball for a 1-0 lead. Wallin-Swanson followed with a two-run single, and the Vikings led 3-0.
Oberlin (2-11) cut the lead to 3-1 in the third, but the Vikings countered with two more in the fifth. Two errors and a ground out put Lawrence runners at second and third, and Guerriero's sacrifice fly scored Wallin-Swanson for a 4-1 lead. Ava Pilgrim followed with a single to score Sedlack, and the Vikings were up 5-1.
Lawrence was ahead 5-2, and the Vikings pulled away with three runs in the seventh. Wallin-Swanson and Sedlack started the inning with singles, and a throwing error on Kourtney Mercer's bunt allowed pinch-runner Adrie Villa to score.
Guerriero's groundout scored Sedlack, and Chilson followed with a run-scoring single for an 8-2 advantage.
Lawrence wraps up its spring break trip with two games on Friday against UW-Platteville and Luther College.
