Pitching leads Vikings to doubleheader sweep of Monmouth

APPLETON, Wis. -- The Lawrence University softball team got a pair of great pitching performances Sunday as the Vikings swept a Midwest Conference doubleheader from Monmouth College at Whiting Field.
Lawrence won the opener 2-1 and took the second game 3-1.
In the first game, Lawrence's Avery Chilson went the distance to pick up the win. She allowed five hits and one unearned run while striking out two and walking one.
Chilson out-dueled two Monmouth pitchers, who combined to allow only two hits.
Monmouth (4-24, 0-6 MWC) scratched out an unearned run in the top of the fifth for a 1-0 lead, but the Vikings came back in the bottom half of the inning.
Zoe Doherty's two-out single got things started in the fifth and it was the first hit for Lawrence (11-15, 6-2). An error allowed pinch-hitter Janna Bode to reach to put runners at first and second. Mattigan Haller then tripled down the right field line to score both runners and put the Vikings up 2-1.
Chilson worked a perfect sixth and worked around a one-out single in the seventh to secure the victory.
In the nightcap, Lawrence starter Georgia Sedlack also went the distance to earn the victory. Sedlack allowed six hits and one run while striking out four and walking two.
Doherty went 2-for-3 with a homer and a double, scored twice and drove in a run. Jordan Wallin-Swanson went 2-for-3 for the Vikings, and Kylan Arndt also went 2-for-3.
Lawrence jumped on Monmouth starter Addie Greene for two runs in the opening inning. Doherty started the game with a double and came in to score on Haller's double. Wallin-Swanson followed with a single to score Haller, and the Vikings led 2-0.
Lawrence tacked on a run in the fifth when Doherty hit her fourth home run of the season, a solo shot to center, for a 3-0 lead.
Monmouth scored in the top of the sixth and had runners at second and third with one out, but Sedlack got a pair of popups to end the threat. Sedlack then worked around a lead-off walk in the seventh to close out the win.
