Chilson pitches Vikings to split with Grinnell

APPLETON, Wis. -- The Lawrence University softball team got a stellar pitching performance from Avery Chilson on Saturday and used that to forge a Midwest Conference doubleheader split with Grinnell College at Whiting Field.
Lawrence won the opener 3-0, and Grinnell took the second game 6-1.
Chilson tossed a five-hit shutout in the opener, and that came on the heels of her combined no-hitter on Thursday. Chilson struck out five and didn't walk a batter in going the distance for her fifth victory of the season.
Zoe Doherty went 2-for-2, and Janessa Gonzalez was 2-for-3 and drove in a run for the Vikings (14-16, 7-3 MWC).
Lawrence scored twice in the first when Doherty singled, and Mattigan Haller doubled to drive in Doherty. Taylor Hughes then added a sacrifice fly to score Haller for a 2-0 edge. Lawrence added an insurance run in the sixth on consecutive singles by Jordan Wallin-Swanson, Hughes and Gonzalez for a 3-0 advantage.
Grinnell never mounted a serious rally and had only one runner reach as far as third base.
In the second game, Grinnell jumped out to a 3-0 lead after two innings and tacked on three more runs in the final two innings to pull away.
Lawrence was limited to five hits, all singles, by pitcher Lane Kohler, who struck out seven and walked three.
