Vikings drop pair at Illinois College

JACKSONVILLE, Ill. -- The Lawrence University softball team lost a pair of games Monday in a Midwest Conference doubleheader at Illinois College.
Illinois College won the opener 10-2 in six innings at Jessica Kamp Field, and the Lady Blues rallied for a 4-3 victory in the nightcap.
In the second game, Lawrence (7-15, 2-2 MWC) outhit Illinois College 8-4, but the Lady Blues put together a four-run fifth inning to get the win.
Jordan Wallin-Swanson went 2-for-4, drove in two runs and scored a run for the Vikings. Janessa Gonzalez also went 2-for-4 and drove in a run for Lawrence. Georgia Sedlack went the distance and took the loss. She allowed three earned runs on four hits, struck out two and walked three.
Lawrence scored twice in the top of the first to grab the lead. Zoe Doherty led off the game with a double, and Wallin-Swanson's single scored Doherty. Gonzalez followed with a single to score Wallin-Swanson, and the Vikings led 2-0.
Illinois College (12-12, 3-1) loaded the bases in the fifth on a hit batter, a walk and an error. A bases-loaded walk got the Lady Blues on the board, and Taylor Henry's three-run double did all the damage. Lawrence trimmed the lead to 4-3 in the seventh when Mattigan Haller singled and came in to score on Wallin-Swanson's single, but the Vikings couldn't keep the rally going.
In the first game, Jordan Closs limited Lawrence to two runs on five hits to pick up the win. Lawrence's only scoring outburst came in the sixth when Taylor Hughes doubled, and Haller followed with a two-run homer to cut the lead to 6-2.
Avery Chilson made the start and allowed four earned runs on 11 hits and took the loss. She struck out one and walked three.
